Finance route — not a grant

    Green Homes Wales interest-free finance

The Green Homes Wales scheme can help eligible Welsh homeowners fund energy-efficiency and low-carbon improvements. It is a finance route managed by the Development Bank of Wales, not a grant and not a loan offered by Renewable Future Wales.

Published Green Homes Wales finance details

    £1,000–£25,000

    Published interest-free loan range

    Up to 10 years

Published repayment term; larger projects may differ

    0% interest

Subject to the current scheme terms and approval

The official page also describes a six-month upfront repayment holiday. All figures, terms and availability can change, so check the official scheme guidance before making decisions.

    What “interest-free” means
You still borrow money and repay the amount borrowed under the agreement.

The published Green Homes Wales information describes an unsecured fixed-sum loan with no interest under the scheme terms. It is not free money, and it does not mean every applicant will be approved.

Applications are subject to affordability and credit-score checks. The Development Bank of Wales makes the lending decision, not RFW.

    Who does what?
Keeping the installation and lending roles clear.

Development Bank of Wales: manages the scheme and decides applications for finance.

Renewable Future Wales: can discuss your renewable-energy needs, assess the installation and prepare a quote. We are not the lender and do not promise eligibility or approval.

You: apply through the official route and remain responsible for checking the current requirements before committing to work or borrowing.

    Renewable improvements the scheme lists

The Development Bank of Wales terms list the following eligible measures. The official assessment and scheme guidance determine what can be funded at your home.

    Heat-pump-ready heating system upgrades
Air source or ground source heat pump top-up (net of BUS)
High-heat-retention storage heaters and biomass boilers
Solar PV, batteries for solar, and solar thermal
External wall, solid wall, floor, cavity wall, flat-roof and room-in-roof insulation
High-performance glazing, loft insulation and draft proofing
Moisture-control ventilation, heat controls and smart-home energy management systems

Heat pump top-ups are described as net of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). BUS eligibility is a separate question and is not replaced by this finance route.

    Who may qualify?
These are the key points in the current official information, not a promise of eligibility.
    • You are a homeowner and the property is your primary, owner-occupied residence
    • The property is in Wales and is not a business or business asset
    • The property is not a new build that has not previously been occupied in the six months before applying
    • You pass the scheme's affordability and credit-score checks
    • The property is not a listed building — the scheme does not currently support listed buildings
    • Conservation-area properties that require additional permissions for the work are excluded; contact the Development Bank of Wales to confirm your property
    Installer and property checks
Confirm these points through the official process before work begins.

The current loan terms require a TrustMark-registered Retrofit Coordinator and a TrustMark-registered installer for the eligible measures. The installer must remain registered until the work is complete.

The scheme does not currently support listed buildings. Conservation-area properties that require additional permissions for the eligible works are also excluded under the current terms.

Guarantees, insurance, planning permission and other consents may also be required. Confirm your property's eligibility through the official scheme process before committing to work.

    How the customer journey works

RFW can help with the installation conversation, but the official finance process belongs with the Development Bank of Wales.

    1. Call Nest first

The Development Bank of Wales says Step 1 is to contact Nest (0808 808 2244) for free and impartial general advice on current support options before registering interest.

    2. Register your interest

Use the Development Bank of Wales Green Homes Wales page to register interest and request the next stage of the home-assessment process.

    3. Review your recommendations

A TrustMark-registered Retrofit Coordinator supports the home assessment. You then choose which eligible measures to take forward and gather quotes.

    4. Apply to the lender

You apply to the Development Bank of Wales for finance. Its affordability and credit checks decide whether lending is approved; RFW cannot approve it.

    5. Arrange installation

After the official process and any required approval, agree the installation with an eligible installer and follow the scheme's payment and evidence requirements.

    Separate support route
Nest: free advice and possible funded improvements
Nest is not the Green Homes Wales loan and is not a universal funding route.

The Welsh Government says Nest can confirm whether eligible households may receive a package of free home energy improvements, such as a heat pump, insulation or solar panels. The current eligibility route includes owning or privately renting, a means-tested benefit or low household income, and the required EPC conditions.

If you are unsure, contact Nest directly for impartial advice and to check your circumstances. Do not assume that a Nest assessment or Green Homes Wales finance is available until the official team confirms it.

Check the official sources before applying
Terms, funding availability and eligibility can change. The official scheme information takes priority over this overview.
