Fishguard, Goodwick and the surrounding north Pembrokeshire coast (SA64/SA65) sit in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, where solar and heat pump installs need careful planning. Yields here are 985–990 kWh/kWp — slightly below the south coast but still well above UK average. We've installed in-roof solar in Lower Fishguard's terraced cottages and ground-mount arrays on the rural smallholdings around Llanychaer.
Why solar and heat pumps work in Fishguard
Rural Fishguard properties are typically off-grid for gas, so heat pumps and solar are a particularly strong combination. The National Park's stricter aesthetic standards mean we routinely specify Solfit flush in-roof systems and dark-frame modules to give the best chance of planning approval first time.
Local property considerations
Many SA64 properties are stone-built with slate roofs needing fabric upgrades before a heat pump retrofit. We've also done several ground-mount arrays for north-Pembrokeshire smallholdings where the roof is unsuitable but a south-sloping field is available — these regularly hit 980 kWh/kWp despite the higher latitude.

Can I get solar approved inside Pembrokeshire Coast National Park?
Yes — but standard surface-mount arrays are usually refused. We use Solfit in-roof systems with dark-frame modules, which have a strong approval record in the National Park because they sit flush with the slate. Listed buildings need additional listed building consent, which we handle as part of the design process.
Does ground-mount solar make sense in north Pembrokeshire?
On a smallholding with a south-facing field, yes. A 10–20 kW ground-mount array typically generates more reliably than a roof system because tilt and orientation are optimal. In Wales, most farm-scale ground-mounts need a full planning application — we handle the submission to Pembrokeshire County Council or the National Park Authority as part of the project.
Will a heat pump work in an off-grid rural Fishguard property?
Yes. ASHPs run on electricity and don't need a gas connection. Combined with solar PV and a 10 kWh+ battery, you can hit 65%+ self-sufficiency annually. We handle the BUS grant paperwork and integrate with existing oil tanks (kept as backup) where requested.
